Forward Places: Providence and the Region |
 |
Forward Places is a campaign driven by New Commons to bring 21st century thinking, linking and doing to the development of our places – cities, regions, towns and villages. Though Forward Places does adhere to some specific principles and processes, it is an open platform that invites a global and local range of thinking, ideas, networks and practitioners to participate.
Forward Places starts with a variety of interesting projects that accesses the many years of knowledge and experience from the New Commons Knowledge network. It will also serve as a catalyst for new research and eventually practices in addressing the question:

In the 21st century, what makes places work for all of us?

The premises and themes that Forward Places holds central in addressing this question:
1. In a globalized world place-centred thinking and action is critical. 2. The goal is to make places that are authentic for the people living there and to ensure they sustain people in tune with the natural and human environment. 3. The making of places, or Placemaking, is a way of thinking and process that skilfully designs and develops places by considering a range of diverse views that integrates the social, economic, ecological, cultural, knowledge and built environment capability of a community. 4. Placemaking is a priority that needs to be generated and controlled at a local level, and supported at a state, regional and national level. 5. Places must have local foresight that establishes a shared understanding among citizens of the conditions that will or may impact their community – creating a collective context for decision making. 6. To go forward a place must also understand its origins and what will remain changeless and rooted as anchors to hold on to while evolution and creation proceeds. 7. Creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship are vital capabilities for communities in taking charge of creating their future. 8. Communities must collaborate through convening diverse groups and networks of people to use intercultural thinking to solve problems and create new opportunity. 9. Happiness should always be a priority of communities. 10. Communities should always be open to the wildcard!
Forward Places has started in Providence, Rhode Island and is designed to expand into New England, The USA, and the World. We welcome your engagement.
